In New York, the Attorney General is chosen by voters for four-year terms with no term limit. AG James was first elected in 2018. The next election is in 2022.

What you should know about AG Tish James:

  • AG Tish James is a part of the multistate coalition of 21 Democratic AGs fighting to defend the Affordable Care Act against an effort to overturn the law. If successful, this lawsuit would preserve health care protections for millions across the country.
  • AG Tish James co-led the effort to keep a discriminatory and dangerous citizenship question off the 2020 Census. The lawsuit ultimately prevailed when the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Trump Administration’s arguments.
  • AG Tish James sued the Trump Administration over its “conscience rule,” a rule that would have allowed health providers to refuse to perform services like abortion on religious or moral grounds. A District Court judge in New York ruled in favor of AG James and declared the rule unconstitutional.
  • AG James is the first African American elected to statewide office in New York and the second woman to hold the office of Attorney General
